The 369th Infantry Regiment — the Harlem Hellfighters — were young men who were doubted, denied, and handed the worst of it. They spent 191 days in the front-line trenches, longer than any other American regiment of the First World War, and never lost a trench or a man taken prisoner.
They paid for it with roughly 1,500 killed and wounded — among the heaviest losses of any American regiment. The regiment was awarded the Croix de Guerre.
They were given the name by the men who fought against them. They kept it.
