Running Your Car in Snow: The 30-Minute Exhaust Rule
If you run the engine for heat while stopped in snow, carbon monoxide is the silent danger. It's invisible and it kills.
1. Clear the exhaust every 30 minutes
Snow packed around the tailpipe sends carbon monoxide back into the cabin. Get out and clear the pipe every 30 minutes.
2. Crack a downwind window
Open a window a little on the side away from the wind while the engine runs.
3. Run it in cycles, not constant
Run the engine ~10 minutes an hour to warm up, then off. Saves fuel and limits exhaust.
4. Stay visible, stay put
A car is shelter and a big signal. Keep a light or cloth visible and stay with it unless help is close and certain.
