Keep Your Phone Alive in the Cold
A phone reading 100% can be near half its usable charge when it's cold. Treat the battery like it's alive — because it kind of is.
1. Keep it warm, in a pocket
Body heat keeps the battery working. An inside pocket beats a bag. Cold is temporary damage; warm it and capacity comes back.
2. Never charge a freezing battery
Charging below about 32F (0C) permanently damages lithium. Warm the phone first, then charge.
3. Change temperature SLOWLY
Don't take a cold phone straight into heat or a hot phone into cold — condensation and thermal stress crack and corrode. Let it change slowly.
4. Off-grid solar: shade the phone, sun the panel
A good USB solar panel works, but keep the PHONE in shade and the PANEL in full sun. Phones throttle and cook in heat; the panel wants sun. Separate them.

Why does my phone die so fast in the cold?
Lithium batteries lose usable capacity in the cold — a phone can read 100% but behave like 50%. Keep it warm in an inside pocket and it recovers.
Can I charge a cold phone?
Not while it's below freezing — that permanently damages the battery. Warm it up first, then charge.
