Stay Warm With No Power (Without Carbon Monoxide Killing You)

Staying warm is about trapping the heat you make and never trading warmth for a silent killer.

1. Layer and trap air
Layers trap warm air. Cover your head, get off the cold floor, share body heat. A hat indoors is not silly.
2. Heat ONE small room
Close off a single small room and warm only that. Blankets over windows and doors hold heat in.
3. NEVER burn fuel indoors
No generator, grill, or fuel heater inside or in a garage — carbon monoxide is invisible, odorless, and kills. Any flame or fuel heater needs real ventilation.
4. Get a CO alarm
A battery carbon-monoxide alarm is a few dollars and the only way you'll know. It's the cheapest life insurance there is.

Common questions

How do I heat my house when the power is out?

Trap body heat with layers, close off and warm one small room, and use only heaters rated for indoor use with ventilation. Never a generator, grill, or camp stove indoors.

Why is carbon monoxide so dangerous in a power outage?

It's invisible and odorless, and people run generators or grills for heat in enclosed spaces. It kills quietly. Keep all fuel-burning outside and use a CO alarm.
